My colleague and I found Eric’s Practical Diamond Grading Course an incredibly effective use of our time and resources. We experienced a steep learning curve from a packed programme, and came away with far more knowledge than one would expect from a two day course. The teaching style is informal, passionate and concise which is obviously founded by in depth experience from many years in the trade. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone with an interest in diamond grading whether they be an enthusiast or retailer, you will find it both fascinating and informative.” Peter M., retailer, Swansea, Jan 2012.
Diamond courses for pawnbrokers have been arranged for 2012. Held in London and Manchester these one-day practical sessions will provide useful diamond identification, grading and valuing know-how. I will be teaching these courses on behalf of the National Pawnbrokers’ Association. Please visit their website to learn more.
Plans for our new one-day workshop on gemstone and jewellery knowledge have been finalised. Full details of date, fee and how to book places and pay online are given on our website www.ericemms.com

We offer short practical gem courses tailored to the demands of jewellery retailers or pawnbrokers or other corporate entities. Recently we provided a bespoke diamond course for a leading retailer in West Sussex. We quote the feedback we receive from the management of the retailer hosting our latest corporate diamond course:
“Thanks again for the training on Sunday, I found the day very interesting and enjoyable. To actually have such a wide range of diamonds with all their varying characteristics was really useful, you can appreciate what you’re looking at when it is physically in front of you rather than looking at a diagram or photo.”
“Hi Eric, well I have arrived in to see very enthused staff, buzzing about what they learned yesterday (Sunday)! They all are keen to see more diamonds now. Thank you so much…Hopefully it can be repeated in the future.”

In partnership with Tracy Jukes, a leading UK coloured stones dealer, Eric will present in 2012 one day workshops on “Gem Qualities and Values”. During the day of handling coloured stones, Eric will lead attendees through topics such as current gem treatments and the latest simulants and synthetics and how gem quality is judged. Tracy will discuss current values of commercially important gems, how treatments affect value and what determines current fluctuations in gem prices.
We are planning our 2012 dates. Call Eric on 07973 725 266 if you wish to know more.
Are you interested in the quality and values of rough (uncut) diamonds? Are you considering trading in rough diamonds? Then think about attending our next Rough Diamonds to Polished Diamonds Course. We had a full contingent of attendees at our last course in July who were keen to learn more on rough and polished diamonds.
On the first day we looked at rough diamond sorting, rough terminologies, diamond sizing, a rough diamond market pricing method using a quality sheet which considers the breakdown of market quality assortments, rough to polished yields and pricing rough diamond parcels.
On the second day we looked at polished diamond identification; grading of clarity and colour with reference to rough qualities; carat weight estimation of diamonds in jewellery and the current state of natural diamond supply and demand; man-made diamonds and an ethical overview of the diamond industry.
Next course will be in 7th and 8th February 2012. See our courses link for more information.
“a huge thanks for holding yesterday’s diamond course, it was good to see you again. Our managers and head office staff all agreed that the course was extremely helpful to them and opened their eyes to many things they had not realised when handling diamond stock and i believe this will be of benefit to our company in the future…I shall shortly be liaising to arrange for the second tranche of staff to attend the next course…All of the attendees agreed your style of teaching was both fun, interesting and ‘really worked for us’ to use a quote. You evidently still have the knack!” Nathan F. pawnbroker, Dartford, June ’11.
If you are considering learning about gems or jewellery we hope you will want to take one of our practical diamond and gem short courses. Past attendees are curious members of the public with little or no knowledge of gems or people considering entering the jewellery trade who wish to gain a basis of gem knowledge and experienced trade people who wish to explore supplementary themes of the subject.
Some attendees set themselves objectives for their career and/or professional development and then chart their progress towards achieving them. Learning and benefiting from us becomes one or two stages of their progress.
However whatever your motives in learning please contact us to learn more.
