SEO: What does it really mean?


Welcome to BlinkJargon, where we cut through the jargon of web marketing in the blink of an eye.SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and refers to the best practices of helping your website rank around certain keywords. 

When a user types in a keyword into Google’s search box, Google first looks through billions of pages in its index and comes up with a list of organic results that are matches for the term.  Google sorts the list so the highest quality are at the top and the lowest quality are at the bottom.Ranking organically is based on a combination of two things: Relevance and Authtority. 

Relevance is a measure of how close of a match a given page is to the term being searched.  The Authority of a page is a measure of how important or authoritative that given page is in the eyes of Google.  The authority of a web page is determined based on the number of Inbound links from other web pages and the authority of those respective pages. So, if your site has an inbound link from the New York Times, Google will place more importance on this inbound link that it would an inbound link from Joe’s Shoe Shop.

How do you go about getting links you say?  The Simple way is through original content creation.  This is why blogging has become so critical in the SEO world, as each blog represents another indexed page. Each blog page is another signal sent to Google stating that your site is alive and breathing.SEO, when done well, is not about tricking Google.
